Say what you REALLY mean

August 18, 2010

I witnessed a conversation about ableist language today and I also read this post. Some people I’ve met have a fierce dislike of all things they call “politically correct” (or political correctness gone mad, which you’ll note is ableist language). I’m not telling you how to speak or what words to say; I’m asking that you be aware of what you’re saying and what other people may understand you to mean. It’s an opportunity to have more control over what people take you to mean. It’s a chance for self-examination. It puts the power in your hands. You can say what you like, all I’m saying is “this is how people may interpret it”. If you’re fine with that, go ahead and say it. If that’s not what you mean you might want to reconsider, then say what you really mean.

Now for the fun part: My good bad language list!
These are words I prefer to use in place of sexist/homophobic/racist/ableist language.
